Keeping the Greasy Side Down - 2011 Grant Winner

Your students can have the most realistic flight experience possible by using a yoke and rudder pedal combination that turns computer flight simulators into true-to-life flying machines. Due to the “Law of Primacy,” students tend to do what they were taught to do in the initial stages of their training. Bad habits, even when corrected later by their flight instructors, come back when they do not have an instructor with them in the cockpit. Pilots should fly the yoke with their left hand and use the right hand to work the trim tabs, flaps, gear, navigation instruments, and radios. Students’ feet should be on the rudder pedals controlling the yaw of the airplane, using the toe brakes when appropriate. Proper use of rudder on takeoffs, landings, and in slow flight is essential—and its improper use may cause fatal accidents. As students gain flight experience on these realistic simulators, the transition to real training aircraft will be easier and more importantly, safer.
